Clary sage oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of Salvia sclarea L., a biennial or short-lived perennial herb native to the Mediterranean basin and now cultivated in France, Russia, the United States, and China (Xinjiang). Unlike the more aggressive common sage (Salvia officinalis, high in thujone), clary sage is dominated by the ester linalyl acetate (50–75%) and the alcohol linalool (15–25%), giving it a sweet, mellow, slightly tea-like aroma with none of the neurotoxic concerns associated with thujone-rich sage oils. The oil also contains the diterpene alcohol sclareol, a valuable starting material for the synthesis of ambroxide (Ambrox), one of the most important modern fragrance chemicals used to replace ambergris.

Hormone balancing

Clary sage is widely regarded as the premier essential oil for women's hormonal health. Its reputation for relieving menstrual cramps, PMS symptoms, and menopausal hot flashes is supported by both traditional use and some preliminary clinical evidence. The oil is believed to have an estrogen-modulating effect via sclareol's structural similarity to human estrogen. Used in massage oil blends (2–3%) and diffusion for menstrual and menopausal support.
Clary sage absolute and concrete are prized in perfumery for their rich, complex aroma, which combines herbaceous freshness with a musky-amber warmth — a key ingredient in fougère and amber compositions. Sclareol, derived from clary sage by solvent extraction of the post-distillation marc, is the primary natural precursor for the industrial synthesis of ambroxide, a crucial ambergris replacement. Our clary sage provides both the essential oil for aromatherapy and the sclareol-rich marc for the fragrance chemical industry.
Used in formulations for oily and combination skin due to its sebum-regulating properties. Its gentle nature makes it suitable for sensitive skin, unlike the more aggressive common sage. Combined with geranium and lavender in balancing facial oils and toners for hormonally reactive skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties support its use in acne and rosacea-prone skin types.

Store in tightly sealed containers in a cool environment. Shelf life: 2 years. Linalyl acetate content decreases slowly over time; cool, dark storage preserves the ester profile and prevents color development.
Under recommended storage conditions — tightly sealed in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight — Clary Sage Oil remains stable for 2 to 3 years. Monitor for any changes in aroma, color, or viscosity before use in production batches.
Clary Sage Oil is steam distillation from the leaves and flowers of a plant in the Lamiaceae family. This method preserves the full spectrum of volatile aromatic compounds and bioactive constituents that define the oil''s therapeutic and sensory profile.
Every shipment includes a Certificate of Analysis (COA) detailing the batch-specific chemical profile (GC/MS or GC-FID), physical parameters (specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation), and organoleptic assessment. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS/SDS) is also provided. Additional documentation — including GC/MS chromatograms, pesticide residue analysis, heavy metal testing, and allergen statements — is available upon request.
