Clove Oil

Clove

Anti-inflammatory, carminative, promotes digestive health

Product Description

Clove oil is steam-distilled from the dried flower buds, leaf, and stems of Syzygium aromaticum (syn. Eugenia caryophyllata), an evergreen tree native to the Maluku Islands (the legendary "Spice Islands") of Indonesia. Indonesia remains the world's largest producer, followed by Madagascar, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka. Our clove oil is sourced from Indonesia and India, with bud oil and leaf oil grades available. All clove oils are dominated by eugenol, the primary aromatic and bioactive compound: clove bud oil contains 80–95% eugenol (the 'high eugenol' premium grade used in food, pharmaceutical, and dental applications); clove leaf oil contains 75–90% eugenol (the more economical grade used in industrial fragrance and as a source for eugenol isolation); clove stem oil contains 90–95% eugenol (the highest eugenol content, preferred for eugenol isolation). Eugenol is a valuable starting material for the semi-synthesis of vanillin (synthetic vanilla flavor), and clove oil is its primary natural source.

Industry Applications

cosmetics

Dental & Oral Care

Eugenol (clove oil) is one of the most historically important compounds in dentistry. Used for centuries as a toothache remedy (applied directly to the affected tooth for its local anesthetic and antiseptic effect), eugenol remains an essential ingredient in temporary dental cements (zinc oxide-eugenol cement), root canal sealers, dental impression materials, and OTC toothache drops. In modern oral care, clove oil is used at low concentrations in toothpastes, mouthwashes, and breath fresheners for its spicy, clean, and long-lasting flavor character.

flavor

Flavor Industry

A key ingredient in spice blends (pumpkin pie spice, garam masala, Chinese five-spice), processed meats (ham, sausages), condiments (ketchup, Worcestershire sauce), and baked goods. Clove bud oil is the preferred food-grade material due to its refined, sweet-spicy profile; clove leaf oil is generally restricted to industrial flavor applications. Clove oleoresin, containing both the essential oil and non-volatile pungent and astringent principles, is also widely used in food flavoring.

fragrance

Fragrance Industry

Provides the spicy-sweet heart in oriental, amber, and carnation-type fragrances. Eugenol (both natural and synthetic) is heavily used in functional fragrances: soaps, detergents, air fresheners, and candles — particularly seasonal/holiday-themed products where the association of clove with Christmas, Thanksgiving, and winter warmth drives consumer preference. Isolated eugenol is also the primary starting material for vanillin synthesis, the world's most produced flavor chemical.

pharma

Pharmaceutical

Eugenol is an approved active pharmaceutical ingredient recognized for its local anesthetic, analgesic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Clove oil is monographed in the European Pharmacopoeia, British Pharmacopoeia, Chinese Pharmacopoeia, USP, and other national pharmacopoeias. Used in OTC toothache preparations, antiseptic mouthwashes, and topical analgesic formulations.

Storage & Shelf Life

Store in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dark place. Shelf life: 3–5 years. Eugenol is a phenolic compound and is inherently stable; eugenol-rich oils darken to a reddish-brown color upon aging — this is normal and does not reflect degraded quality. Protect from iron and copper, which form colored complexes with eugenol and accelerate discoloration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the shelf life of

Under recommended storage conditions — tightly sealed in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight — Clove Oil remains stable for 2 to 3 years. Monitor for any changes in aroma, color, or viscosity before use in production batches.

How is Clove Oil extracted?

Clove Oil is steam distillation from the leaves, stems, and flower buds of a plant in the Myrtaceae family. This method preserves the full spectrum of volatile aromatic compounds and bioactive constituents that define the oil''s therapeutic and sensory profile.

What documentation do you provide with bulk orders?

Every shipment includes a Certificate of Analysis (COA) detailing the batch-specific chemical profile (GC/MS or GC-FID), physical parameters (specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation), and organoleptic assessment. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS/SDS) is also provided. Additional documentation — including GC/MS chromatograms, pesticide residue analysis, heavy metal testing, and allergen statements — is available upon request.

What are the minimum order quantities (MOQ)?

Standard MOQ is 1 kg for most essential oils, with bulk pricing available at 5 kg, 25 kg, and 180 kg drum quantities. Contact our sales team for current pricing and availability for your required volume.

Do you offer samples for evaluation?

Yes. We provide complimentary 10–30 mL samples of most products for qualified B2B buyers to evaluate quality, aroma, and suitability before placing bulk orders. Sample requests are subject to availability and shipping costs may apply. Request a sample through our contact form.
