Frankincense oil, also known as olibanum, is steam-distilled from the oleo-gum-resin exuded by trees of the genus Boswellia, which grow in the arid, mountainous regions of the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia), the Arabian Peninsula (Oman, Yemen), and northwestern India. The resin—harvested by making incisions in the bark and collecting the dried tears—has been traded along the Incense Route since 3000 BC and remains integral to religious ceremonies, traditional medicine, and modern aromatherapy.
