Nutmeg Oil

Appetite stimulant

Product Description

Nutmeg oil is steam-distilled from the dried kernels (seeds) of Myristica fragrans Houtt., an evergreen tree indigenous to the Banda Islands of Indonesia (the legendary 'Spice Islands'). Indonesia and Grenada dominate world nutmeg production. The oil is rich in monoterpene hydrocarbons (sabinene, α-pinene, β-pinene) and the phenylpropanoid ether myristicin (typically 5–12%), with smaller amounts of elemicin and safrole. Our nutmeg oil is sourced from both India and Indonesia.

Industry Applications

flavor

Flavor Industry

Nutmeg oil and nutmeg oleoresin are widely used in the flavor industry for baked goods, confectionery, processed meats (particularly sausages and pâtés), sauces, and beverages (eggnog, mulled wine, cola). The essential oil provides the fresh, top-note spicy character, while the oleoresin contributes the full-bodied flavor and subtle pungency that characterizes freshly ground nutmeg.

fragrance

Fragrance Industry

Used in oriental, spicy, and fougère fragrance compositions, particularly in men's fragrances. Provides a warm, dry, spicy-aromatic character that complements lavender, oakmoss, and coumarin in classical fougère formulations. Also used in seasonal/holiday-themed home fragrance products (combined with cinnamon, clove, and orange for the classic 'winter spice' accord).

aromatherapy

Aromatherapy

Used for digestive comfort and as a gentle circulatory stimulant. Nutmeg oil is incorporated into massage blends for muscular aches, poor digestion, and mental fatigue. It has a reputation as a mild sedative and sleep aid at very low dilutions in diffusion and massage. NOTE: Myristicin and safrole content means nutmeg oil should be used at low concentrations (<1%) and not during pregnancy. The reputed hallucinogenic effects of nutmeg are associated with ingestion of large quantities of the ground spice, not with aromatherapeutic use of the essential oil at typical dilutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the shelf life of

Under recommended storage conditions — tightly sealed in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight — Nutmeg Oil remains stable for 2 to 3 years. Monitor for any changes in aroma, color, or viscosity before use in production batches.

How is Nutmeg Oil extracted?

Nutmeg Oil is steam distillation from the fruits of a plant in the Myristicaceae family. This method preserves the full spectrum of volatile aromatic compounds and bioactive constituents that define the oil''s therapeutic and sensory profile.

What documentation do you provide with bulk orders?

Every shipment includes a Certificate of Analysis (COA) detailing the batch-specific chemical profile (GC/MS or GC-FID), physical parameters (specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation), and organoleptic assessment. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS/SDS) is also provided. Additional documentation — including GC/MS chromatograms, pesticide residue analysis, heavy metal testing, and allergen statements — is available upon request.

What are the minimum order quantities (MOQ)?

Standard MOQ is 1 kg for most essential oils, with bulk pricing available at 5 kg, 25 kg, and 180 kg drum quantities. Contact our sales team for current pricing and availability for your required volume.

Do you offer samples for evaluation?

Yes. We provide complimentary 10–30 mL samples of most products for qualified B2B buyers to evaluate quality, aroma, and suitability before placing bulk orders. Sample requests are subject to availability and shipping costs may apply. Request a sample through our contact form.
