Our product is German chamomile, steam-distilled from the flowering tops of Matricaria chamomilla, sourced from Xinjiang, China. The deep blue color — unique among essential oils — is due to chamazulene, which is NOT present in the living plant but forms during the distillation process from the thermal decomposition of matricin, a sesquiterpene lactone that is colorless. The intensity of the blue color correlates with chamazulene content and is a quality indicator for German chamomile oil. German chamomile is one of the most extensively researched medicinal plants; the essential oil is monographed in the European Pharmacopoeia and the German Commission E.

Store in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dark place. Shelf life: 3–4 years. Chamazulene is sensitive to oxidation; use containers with nitrogen-blanketed headspace for long-term storage. The blue color may slowly fade with exposure to light and air. Protect from light.
