Geranium Oil

Geranium

Purifying and astringent, balances sebum; reduces scars and stretch marks

Product Description

Geranium oil is steam-distilled from the leaves, stalks, and flowers of Pelargonium graveolens and related Pelargonium species (commonly called 'rose geranium'), tender perennial shrubs native to South Africa and now cultivated globally — primarily in Egypt, China (Yunnan province), Reunion Island ("Bourbon" geranium), and South Africa. The oil is dominated by the monoterpene alcohols citronellol and geraniol, which together account for 40–70% of the oil and give geranium its distinctive rosy-floral character. Chinese geranium oil from Yunnan has established itself as a major commercial grade, offering a balanced citronellol-geraniol profile at competitive pricing. Geranium is often used as a cost-effective alternative or extender for rose oil in personal care and functional fragrance applications, though its distinct green-leafy, slightly citrus-minty character makes it a versatile ingredient in its own right.

Industry Applications

Skincare & Cosmetics

One of the most important essential oils for natural skincare. Geranium is balancing — astringent enough for oily and combination skin types, yet gentle enough for dry and mature skin. Its cicatrisant, anti-inflammatory, and mild antimicrobial properties support its use in anti-acne, anti-aging, and general complexion-enhancing formulations. Often used in facial oils, creams, and body lotions at 0.5–2.0%. The oil's natural green color (from trace chlorophyll) is valued in uncolored 'clean beauty' products.

aromatherapy

Aromatherapy

Associated with hormonal balance and emotional equilibrium. Geranium is used in aromatherapy for PMS, menopausal symptoms, mood swings, and stress-related conditions. Its 'rose-like but greener' aroma is perceived as balancing, harmonizing, and gently uplifting rather than sedating or stimulating — ideal for daytime diffusion and workplace wellness.

Natural Insect Repellent

Citronellol, a major constituent of geranium oil, is a well-established natural insect repellent. Geranium oil, alone or in combination with citronella, lemongrass, and lemon eucalyptus oils, is used in DEET-free insect repellent sprays, lotions, and candles. It is particularly effective against mosquitoes and ticks and is considered generally safe for topical use at appropriate dilutions.

What documentation do you provide with bulk orders?

Every shipment includes a Certificate of Analysis (COA) detailing the batch-specific chemical profile (GC/MS or GC-FID), physical parameters (specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation), and organoleptic assessment. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS/SDS) is also provided. Additional documentation — including GC/MS chromatograms, pesticide residue analysis, heavy metal testing, and allergen statements — is available upon request.

What are the minimum order quantities (MOQ)?

Standard MOQ is 1 kg for most essential oils, with bulk pricing available at 5 kg, 25 kg, and 180 kg drum quantities. Contact our sales team for current pricing and availability for your required volume.
